Turning Down Barter Business?

Turning Down Barter Business?

Is it ever right to turn away barter business?  If you ask me I'll say, NEVER!

Why?  I'll tell you why but first let me ask you a question.  Are you so busy that you don't have available time or inventory to take on new business?  If not, then I say you should never turn down a barter customer.

I've been in the barter industry for 24 years and I've never known anyone unable to use their trade dollars.   They may have chosen to not buy certain goods or services but it was their choice and not because there weren't things to buy.

Unless you're a hermit living in a cave you're going to celebrate birthdays and holidays, attend weddings, entertain clients, take a vacation, etc.  There are always barter members offering goods and services appropriate for such events.

Some of you still pay cash for commonly traded business expenses such as tax preparation, accounting, advertising, cleaning, etc.  Why?

None of us has a crystal ball.  Unexpected things happen.  The roof could spring a leak and need repair.  Someone could sue you and you'll need an attorney.  Where are you going to get the money?

You never know what will be offered on trade tomorrow.  I've had clients kick themselves for turning away business we offered them last month when they see what's offered to them this month and they don't have enough barter dollars to buy it.

These are a few of the reasons you should never say no to barter business.  In an economy like we've had the past year, your cash clients are not all spending what they used to.  Barter customers have always been there for you.

I'm amazed at the number of AOB members recently seeking additional barter business.  The clients advertised in this Trader Update are some of the many who welcome your trade dollars.  One day they may want to buy from you.  What will you tell them then?

Thank you all for a wonderful trading month.  Let's hope it's a sign that the economy is turning around.

Best wishes for continued success.
